Started out of concern for a family's Airedale terrier, Blue Buffalo makes healthy, nutritious foods for dogs and cats. Their line of dog foods include ideal weight, high-protein, grain-free and sensitive solution formulas.
Meats and Protein
Blue Buffalo prides itself on never using poultry or chicken by-product meals, only specified meals derived from the best parts of the meat. "Real" meat is the first ingredient in all of Blue Buffalo's foods, whether it's fish, chicken or lamb. Eggs are also included in many of the formulas, as well as beef, turkey and other healthy meats and poultry ingredients.
Veggies and Fruits
Vegetables and fruits naturally provide a wide range of vitamins and minerals to your pet just as they do for you. Many dogs thoroughly enjoy veggies and fruits, whether in their kibble or fed as treats. Examples of the fruits and vegetables found in Blue Buffalo products include carrots, peas and blueberries. Other ingredients such as kelp, parsley, alfalfa, cranberries, spinach and broccoli might also be included.
Fats and Carbs
Fats are important in any diet as they provide more concentrated energy than proteins or carbohydrates. Some vitamins also require fats for absorption, especially fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D and E. Like in your diet, some fats are better than others and work with the body instead of against it. Fatty acids, for example, help with joint inflammation and the health of the skin. The fat sources in Blue Buffalo dog food come from healthy vegetable oils including flax and sunflower, chicken fat and various fish oils. The carbs found in Blue Buffalo are from whole grains, not refined grains. Brown rice, barley and oats are common sources of grains found in the ingredients list. You won't find corn, wheat or soy in Blue Buffalo products because those ingredients are commonly associated with allergies.
Vitamins and Minerals
Blue Buffalo has an exclusive ingredient in their foods known as "LifeSource Bits." These small, colorful pieces in the kibble are cold-formed vitamins and antioxidants instead of cooked vitamins and minerals found in some kibbles and food brands. When cooked, some vitamins lose many of their healthy, beneficial properties. Like many other premium dog foods, Blue Buffalo also uses chelated minerals, which means the minerals are attached to amino acids for easier absorption into the bloodstream.
